Nursing Informatics Residency

Builds the student's knowledge and experience in nursing informatics within the context of advanced nursing practice. Students develop independent problem solving skills in the synthesis of advanced practice nursing and informatics under the guidance and mentorship of a practicing informatics specialist (preceptor).

I was fortunate enough to travel to Duke for a wonderful on-campus experience working at Duke Health Technology Solutions with Becky Kitzmiller and Connie Bishop. I had the chance to see nursing informaticists working in many roles and was exposed to the large and complex systems that facilitate care delivery at Duke. I also had the opportunity to attend many conferences, lectures, and meetings while in town.

My deliverables for this experience included a main project plan template for Duke's upcoming clinical documentation implementation, along with an interface plan and a unit specific template. I also created a diagram of the data pathway for their emergency department information system. In addition to those deliverables, I wrote extensive log entries of my day-to-day experiences and received feedback from other students and our instructor.
